For many, prayer is a central aspect of daily life, but it isn’t always easy.
That’s why Fr. James Martin wrote his latest book, “Learning to Pray, a Guide for Everyone”. It’s aim is to accompany readers through the experience of prayer.

“The book is different from other books on prayer in that it really tries to talk about what happens when you pray. So many books on prayer can unfortunately be a little vague and talk about the fruits of prayer or feeling close to God, when what people really want to know is what happens when I close my eyes. What’s really supposed to go on?”
The book is a resource for anyone looking to grow closer to God, as well as for those who may simply not know how to engage in prayer.

“It’s especially important today because so many people I think are desiring prayer or desiring a relationship with God without a whole lot of instruction or a whole lot of knowledge on how to go about that.”
Drawing from his own experience as a Jesuit, Fr Martin explores the different ways one can form a relationship with God through prayer.
“Learning to Pray” is a comprehensive guide to prayer that seeks to make the practice of prayer accessible to everyone.

“When I say everyone can pray, I really mean it, that God seeks a relationship with everyone, and I think all of us can experience that and can know that because we all have a desire for prayer, we have a desire to be in connection, be in a relationship with God. And I would say that that desire comes from God, that’s the way that God has of drawing us closer to God, and so that desire for prayer is really God’s desire for you, and that’s the case for everyone.”
The idea of prayer as part of an interpersonal relationship with God, is just one of the insights presented in the book – which is truly, as the title says: “A Guide for Everyone”.
