In a short conversation presented as an interview with Italian news outlet Corriere della Sera, Benedict XVI reiterates that Pope Francis is the only pope.
He also settled the matter of his resignation. He says it was a free and premeditated decision and that it was not the result of any conspiracy.
This is what he said:
“Some friends of mine, somewhat fanatical, are still angry and refuse to accept my decision. I'm referring to conspiracy theories.
They don't want to believe that it was a premeditated decision. But my conscience is at peace.”
Benedict appears worried about Pope Francis' trip to Iraq, because of the country's instability and the pandemic. Nevertheless, he assures that his prayers will go with the pope.
The journalist notes that Benedict XVI is weak and thin, that he speaks very slowly, but remains lucid.
Just like last Nov. 28, when he welcomed the pope and the new cardinals into his home.
