Human rights must be respected even amid measures implemented to curb the ongoing pandemic. That's what the Vatican's Secretary for Relations with States, Arch. Paul Richard Gallagher, said in a video message to the United Nations.

“It has also challenged our commitment to the protection and promotion of universal human rights, while at the same time asserting their relevance. As a global community, we need to rediscover the foundation of human rights in order to implement them in an authentic fashion.”
He highlighted that the Preamble of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the UN Charter both recognize the inherent dignity of all human beings. It's an assertion that “is not conditioned by time, place, culture or context.”
The Vatican Secretary for Relations with States also signaled that the global response to the pandemic shows that a “robust understanding of religious freedom is being eroded.”
