The pope responded to the attack that claimed the lives of Italian Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo Luca Attanasio, Italian military police officer Vittorio Iacovacci, and driver Mustapha Milambo. The events took place near Goma, in the northeastern part of the country.
In this letter to Italian president Sergio Mattarella, Pope Francis expressed his closeness to relatives and friends of the diplomatic corps and the Italian military police corps.
The pope described the Italian diplomat, the country's youngest, as an excellent person and Christian, always willing to “establish fraternal and cordial relationships, to reestablish serene and harmonious relationships in the heart of the African country.”
He also remembered the generous service of the military police officer who accompanied him and who was about to form a new family.
The pope prays for these people who were brutally killed in a violent attack against a UN convoy.
