The Vatican published a set of guidelines for Holy Week celebrations. It will be the second Holy Week celebrated during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Many countries' strict measures make it impossible for many people to go to parishes. That's why bishops will be allowed to decide whether or not to limit the Paschal Triduum ceremonies.
The bishop will make his decision in consideration of the good of the faithful, but also on restrictions set by public authorities.
The Vatican recommends that those unable to attend celebrations in person follow them on TV or online.
The traditional washing of the feet on Holy Thursday, and the Eucharistic procession, can be omitted.
The bishop of each diocese has the final say on these measures. He must also prepare the material necessary to help Catholics live this liturgical period.
The Congregation for Divine Worship prepared these guidelines. The text concludes by acknowledging that these restrictions weren't always easy for priests and the lay faithful to accept, but that they were necessary to protect public health.
