As in every part of the world, Rome is preparing for an unusual Christmas. A sense of the atmosphere can already be felt in St. Peter's Square.

Not even the lights decorating the Eternal City can hide a feeling shared by locals and tourists.

MARISOL SILVA
“Considering that Rome is a touristic city, it's strange. Usually, the square is full of people. You have to wait in line to visit the Nativity scene. This year it will be the Romans who stay in Rome for Christmas.”

ALEXANDRA VILLENA
“It'll be quite different. For instance, I'll be spending Christmas alone. I don't have any relatives in Rome, so I usually meet up with friends on Christmas Eve and then to celebrate Christmas and welcome Baby Jesus. However, due to the global situation, everything's changed.”

On Dec. 24 and 25, the entire Italian territory will be in lockdown. This will also be the case on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.

Movement in the city will be very limited, though the Italian government will allow people to leave their homes to attend Mass.

XAVIER MORA
Seminarian

“I see this Christmas as a grace, since we're alive. We're here in front of the great immensity of the city of Rome. Surely it's a difficult time, but we're sharing with family, which is the important thing. At the house where I study, my fellow seminarians and the priests will have a joyful and happy Christmas.”

ORLANDO VERGARA
Tourist

“With 2021 right around the corner, we have to put in our best effort. Those who are able can spend Christmas with their families. Those who can't can still have a virtual Christmas. Either way, we have to remain close in this time that brings a lot of positivity.”

Nothing stops at the heart of Christianity. The Vatican has adapted its schedule and adopted health safety measures for the Christmas celebrations.

Surely the world will be watching as the pope gives the Urbi et Orbi blessing on Dec. 25. This year it will be an even greater sign of hope given the circumstances.
