Pope Francis noted it's been 40 years since the tragic murders of four missionaries in El Salvador in 1980.
POPE FRANCIS
On Dec. 2, 1980, they were kidnapped, raped and assassinated by a group of paramilitaries. They were carrying out their work in El Salvador during the civil war. They were committed to the Gospel and risked a lot. They delivered food and medicine to the displaced, and they helped some of the poorest families. These women lived out their faith with great generosity. They're an example for all, to transform into faithful missionary disciples.
They're Ita Ford and Maura Clarke, religious sisters from the institution of Maryknoll; Dorothy Kazel, who was an Ursulin; and Jean Donovan, a lay missionary. They were all in the United States and became victims of the violence that broke out in El Salvador, the same violence that claimed Oscar Romero's life.
