The feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is celebrated on Dec. 12. Nevertheless, Mexican authorities have decided to close the basilica from Dec. 10 to 13.

The reason is the pandemic. Mexico is one of the most affected countries, with more than one million cases. Authorities recommend celebrating the feast at the local level, in parishes or at home, and to avoid large gatherings. They also suggest following celebrations in the basilica through streaming.

These measures were first announced at the end of October. The rector of the basilica noted that every year around Dec. 12, about 15 million people visit the basilica. He said that's why this year it would be necessary to celebrate Our Lady with “creativity and prudence.”

“If you want to visit this basilica, if you want to visit Our Blessed Mother of Guadalupe, let us try to avoid doing so in December.”

Mexican authorities define the year 2020 as one of the most challenging for the country. That's why they suggest celebrating Guadalupe in a more private manner. “This time,” they say, “it will be the Blessed Mother who will go out to the homes of the Mexican and Latin-American people.”
