The Magistral Palace in Rome, the seat of the Order of Malta's government, is where the Council Complete of State will meet to elect its Grand Master or a Lieutenant ad Interim until the election of a Grand Master.

Between Nov. 7 and 8, the name of the successor of Friar Giacomo Dalla Torre, who died on April 29, will be made known. In 2017, he became the Order's provisional leader, and was later elected as its superior.

One of the tasks of the new Grand Master of the Order of Malta will be to continue the reform process of the Order's Constitutional Charter and Code. The changes are being made to strengthen the spiritual aspect of the institution and prevent future periods of crisis.

The election will respect security protocols in place because of the pandemic. If there aren't any surprises, Sunday, Nov. 8, is the day the new Grand Master will be sworn in before the Pontifical Delegate, Card. Silvano Tomasi.

The Order of Malta is a sovereign entity, equivalent to a state, and recognized since the year 1048 for its humanitarian work around the world. It currently holds diplomatic ties with 120 countries and counts on 13,500 knights and dames, 80,000 volunteers and 20,000 employees distributed around the globe.
