The Apostolic Nunciature in Poland published a statement explaining the Holy See's disciplinary actions against Card. Henryk Gulbinowicz, 97. The announcement says the Holy See decided to impose these restrictions after investigating the cardinal's past. It does not however, specify the investigation's findings.

Gulbinowicz was named cardinal by John Paul II in 1985. He is now banned from participating in any celebrations or public meetings and from using bishops' insignia. He is also prohibited from using funeral services and from being buried in the city's cathedral.

Finally, the cardinal is required to donate an appropriate amount of money to the St. Joseph's Foundation, established by Polish bishops to support sexual abuse victims. The foundation focuses on psychological assistance and on the prevention and education of persons responsible for the protection of minors.
