First Malaysian cardinal, Anthony Soter Fernandez, dies
The first Malaysian cardinal, Anthony Soter Fernandez, died at 88 after suffering from tongue cancer.
Pope Francis gave him the cardinal's biretta at the consistory on Nov. 19, 2016, when he was already an emeritus, in consideration of his service to the Church.
He was one of the most important Church figures in his country. He was bishop of Penang, Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur and president of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei.
Considering the upcoming Nov. 28 consistory, the College of Cardinals now has 128 electors and 103 non-electors for a future conclave.
