The FAO is celebrating its 75 years with World Food Day.
During an important conference, the organization reminded that the number of people going hungry is increasing. That's 690 million people, which is 10 million more than last year.
The problem is that the coronavirus could further exacerbate the situation and bring that number up to 100 million more.
It's a dramatic emergency for the director of the World Food Program, who will receive the Nobel Peace Prize this year.
DAVID BEASLEY
WFP Executive Director
“We know right now, because of COVID and climate extremes and conflict—man-made conflict—we're facing now 270 million people on the brink of starvation. We need to act, and we need to act right now.”
The FAO asks all countries to work together to overcome this challenge.
Pope Francis also intervened, saying hunger is not only a tragedy, but a shame.
POPE FRANCIS
“It's caused by an unequal distribution of the earth's resources, to which is added a lack of investments in the agricultural sector; the consequences of climate change; and the rising number of conflicts in different areas of the planet. Furthermore, tons of food are thrown away. In front of this reality, we cannot remain indifferent.”
The issue is that although the world produces enough food for everyone, there is a lack of access to food products that guarantee proper nutrition. That's why the FAO this year asks to join forces.
