At 9:35 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14, the Vatican City State Tribunal began its first civil trial against a priest accused of committing abuses on its territory.
Protocol number 8417, general criminal procedure... Martinelli, Gabriele. Defended by the lawyer Rita Claudia Baffioni.
The incidents allegedly occurred between 2007 and 2012 by the now priest against a fellow student of St. Pius X preparatory seminary, when both were students and minors.
During that time, the accused was a supervisor and coordinator of the seminarians' activities. Among them was the alleged victim. Therefore, in addition to the charges of sexual abuse, there was also an abuse of authority.
The court, however, will only prosecute him for crimes committed when he was an adult.
The Vatican justice system also called to the stand the rector of the institution at the time the events allegedly occurred.

The latter is accused of alleged cover-up and complicity.
After the charges were read, the hearing was rescheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 27, when the restriction on the evidence presented by the defense will be withdrawn and the defendants will be questioned.
