The Ukrainian Cardinal Marian Jaworski died in Krakow at the age of 94. He was a great friend of John Paul II and was one of the few people present inside the room where John Paul II died.
He led the Ukrainian Bishops' Conference for many years. He was appointed cardinal in 1998 and participated in the conclave from which Benedict XVI was elected.
With his passing, the total number of cardinals drops to 219. Of these, 122 are under 80 years of age and therefore can vote in the event of a conclave.
