One of the strategic departments of the Vatican is the 'Fabric of St. Peter.' It's in charge of maintaining, preserving and restoring the Vatican basilica.

It's one of the main sources of contracts and public works. The office of the general auditor has detected irregularities in its accounts, specifically, a lack of competition in public works and omissions in the accounts.

The Vatican police has confiscated computers and documents from the department to clarify the situation.

Moreover, the pope has appointed an extraordinary commissioner to investigate what happened, reorganize the departments and update the statutes.

The commissioner is former nuncio Mario Giordana, who has already investigated irregularities in contracts of the Vatican choir.
