Pope Francis will celebrate Mass on Monday, June 29, the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul. He will also bless the pallia of the metropolitan archbishops appointed over the last year.
The pallium is a woolen band draped over the archbishop's shoulders. It is white with black crosses.
POPE FRANCIS
June 29, 2019
The pallium recalls the sheep that the shepherd is called to bear on his shoulders. It is a sign that the shepherds do not live for themselves but for the sheep.
Before Pope Francis' pontificate, the pallia were imposed at the Vatican. Now each archbishop receives it in his own archdiocese, in front of the faithful and other bishops.
