Amidst protests and marches throughout the United States on behalf of George Floyd and “Black Lives Matter,” the Archbishop of Philadelphia held a news conference.

As Chairman of the Committee on Cultural Diversity for the USCCB, Archbishop Nelson Pérez said even in these difficult times, there are signs of hope in the action being taken.

There is hope in the gathering of peaceful protesters, so many of them young people. I am so proud to see them. Raising their voices to all of us and calling for a more just city and country, where live is respected and celebrated. I'm proud of those who gathered to restore order. To clean up the result of the unfortunate destructive behavior of a few, something that should have never happened.

The archbishop said that those who had used this as an opportunity for violence forgot the real mission of supporting and protecting each other. He also encouraged Americans.

“We're better than that. These people who showed up in our neighborhoods and in our places of commerce with brooms and bags, reminded us that yes, we are better than that.”

Archbishop Perez thanked those praying during this time and those who are seeking the dignity of all.

“People of faith and spiritual traditions who deeply care, who want to make a difference and who want to make sure the pandemic of racism is removed from our midst.”

Catholic bishops from around the nation have stood up during this time for the African-American population and against racism. They published a video with a prayer “to overcome racism.” It asks for the hatred to be “replaced with a love that respects the dignity of each person.”
