During his homily in Santa Marta, the pope asked Christians to ask themselves if they are like “bats,” who become used to the darkness of sin, and are unable to see things in the light of God.

We also, when we are in sin, are like this: we cannot tolerate light. It is more comfortable for us to live in the dark. Light slaps us, makes us see what we don't want to see. The worst part is that the eyes, the eyes of the soul, from living so long in darkness get used to it, and they end up ignoring light.
Pope Francis invited Christians to ask themselves every day if they allow the love of God to enlighten them, or if they prefer to walk in darkness, brought by the lord of darkness.
