Before beginning Mass in Santa Marta, the pope prayed for fraternal unity between countries at this critical moment.

In this time, when so much unity is needed among us, between nations, today, we pray for Europe. May Europe have this unity, this fraternal unity that the founding fathers of the European Union dreamed of.
This Thursday there will be a virtual meeting with heads of government in Europe to finalize measures for reconstruction after the pandemic. There is currently no consensus among the participants on how to help the most-affected countries.
The pope asks to remember the principles uniting the European Union, which are not only economic.
