In the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, the Vatican asks priests to be prudent when hearing confessions. It asks them to wear face masks, stay in ventilated areas and respect safety distances. The pope also explains what to do when confession is not possible.
POPE FRANCIS
If you don't find a priest to go to confession, speak to God. He's your Father. Tell Him the truth. ‘Lord. I did this and this and this. Pardon me.’ Ask His forgiveness with all your heart, with an act of contrition, and promise Him, ‘Afterward I will go to confession.’ You will return to God's grace immediately.
The Vatican also asks bishops to consider granting general absolution in hospitals infected by the coronavirus.
Pope Francis has also granted a plenary indulgence to people in risk of dying and/or those sick with the coronavirus. The indulgence applies to their family members, medical staff and all those who care for them. It even extends to those who pray for an end to the pandemic.
The Apostolic Penitentiary explains that contrition for one's sins and participating in different forms of prayer are enough to gain the indulgence. Those wanting to obtain it can participate in Mass online, pray the rosary or the Way of the Cross, or observe other forms of devotion, including saying the Creed, the Our Father and a prayer to the Blessed Mother.
