Rome reopens some churches to let people pray

Although the Vicariate of Rome, in keeping with the restrictions imposed by the Italian government, decided to close churches to the public, Pope Francis suggested taking a step back, asking priests not to leave the people alone.

POPE FRANCIS
“Drastic measures are not always good. Therefore, we pray that the Holy Spirit might grant pastoral discernment and the ability to find measures that might not leave the holy, faithful people of God alone.”

Although Masses remain canceled in Rome, weddings and funerals can still be celebrated with a short prayer. Parishes are the only churches to remain open.

These measures don't apply to the major basilicas like St. Peter's, which at seven years since the pope's election, presents a radically distinct scene. This space, in 2013 packed full of people, stands in absolute silence in 2020.
