While schools shut down and events are canceled because of the coronavirus, dedicated members of Caritas Internationalis make preparations to continue serving those in need.

“Our service to the poor continues, because our service to the poor cannot be stopped by coronavirus. So our staff will be continuing to work from home, and they are committed to do that.”
The secretary general of the organization since May 2019, Aloysius John explains some of the measures being taken to keep staff and volunteers in the loop as the situation develops.

“We have been sending out communications to the members, to the network, giving them some information about the evolution of the disease. We have also given a certain number of instructions to our staff, more in the area of hygiene, and also to take preventive measures.”
With the recent government decision to temporarily close schools in Rome, Caritas is also taking measures to support its own staff's continued work.

“If there are mothers, young mothers, we also make provisions for them to be able to either work from home or be with their children, because in case there's a need, they have to be there.”
The secretary general says the organization is also limiting travel, unless absolutely necessary. Caritas Internationalis shows that it is possible to stay above the paralyzing panic that seems to be spreading just as widely as the virus.
