There is one thing the pope allows himself on his birthday in the Vatican. He invites society's most disadvantaged to his table. That's what he did on his first birthday in Santa Marta. He celebrated it with the housekeepers and three homeless people.
On his 80th birthday, he repeated this gesture and had breakfast with eight homeless people, who gave him flowers as a gift.
Jorge Mario Bergoglio celebrates his seventh birthday as Pope Francis. He enjoys good health, despite the normal difficulties that come with age and a lung lesion that he's dealt with since he was a teen. This year he underwent an eye operation without any complications.
