Pope Francis has just finished his 32nd papal trip, making Japan the 49th country he has visited.

In Japan, the pope went to the two cities destroyed by the atomic bombs during WWII. He also prayed at the memorial dedicated to St. Paul Miki and the country's martyrs who were killed during a time of religious persecution.

Pope Francis also offered words of comfort to the victims of the triple disaster of 2011. These people lost everything in the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear catastrophe.

The pope also met with country authorities, starting with Emperor Naruhito, with whom he had a 20-minute conversation.

As a young Jesuit, Pope Francis had wanted to become a missionary in Japan. The wait was well worth it, as, although several years later, he has finally visited the country of the Rising Sun as pope.
