Pope Francis showed concern for the dire situation of abandonment many people around the world suffer.

“I recently saw, a few minutes ago, some statistics regarding poverty. They cause pain! Society's indifference toward the poor. Let us pray.”
In the face of this tragic reality of poverty and suffering, the pope also remembered the Christian martyrs, whose lives of humility and mercy offer today's Christians hope and an example to follow.

Minutes before, he had asked for applause for Fr. Emilio Moscoso, a Jesuit martyr who was beatified this past weekend in Riobamba, Ecuador.
