Pope Francis met with the International Federation of Catholic Universities, which is holding a congress in Rome about the new challenges these educational institutions face.
The pope reflected on the difficulties that affect the mission of these universities. This is why he reminded teachers they are responsible not only for the formation of future professionals, but also the formation of proponents of the common good.

“In this light, the university can be viewed as not only conscious, but also having an intellectual and moral energy whose responsibility goes beyond the person to be educated and extends to the needs of all humanity.”
Pope Francis insisted that the education of future leaders must not only focus on their minds but also the development of their hearts and consciouses. Scientific and technological knowledge must be combined with sensitivity, especially in the case of Catholic universities.

“Education reduced to mere technical instruction becomes a ruptured education. To believe that we can transmit knowledge by abstracting from its ethical dimension would be to abandon the task of teaching.”
Pope Francis asked them to contribute to creating an international academic community to foster the cultural development of individuals and groups.
The pope also acknowledged of Card. John Henry Newman, who is patron of the International Federation of Catholic Universities.
