The new commander of the Vatican Gendarmerie had his first day of work at a public event: Wednesday's General Audience.
He remained close to the pontiff, especially when Pope Francis was close to pilgrims at the end of his time on the popemobile.
The new commander's name is Gianluca Gauzzi Broccoletti and he is 45 years old. Until now, he was the number two of the Gendarmerie.
He replaced Domenico Giani, who presented his resignation to the pope on Oct. 15, after a police document was leaked to the press.
Giani investigated the leak for two weeks without successfully identifying who leaked the document. He then decided to present his resignation to Pope Francis.
