Pope Francis met with members of the Society for the Law of the Eastern Churches, who were celebrating their 50th anniversary.
The pope told them the study of Canon Law is essential and a great help toward ecumenical dialogue.
POPE FRANCIS
“Based on the common canonical heritage of the first millennium, the current theological dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church seeks precisely a common understanding of primacy and synodality and their relationship in the service of the unity of the Church.”
The pope stressed the importance of synodality. He said when synodality is translated into certain institutions and expressions within the Church the ecumenical dimension of canon law is seen.
POPE FRANCIS
“On one hand, we have the opportunity to learn from the synodal experience of other traditions, especially those of the Eastern Churches. On the other hand, it is clear that the way in which the Catholic Church experiences synodality is important for its relations with other Christians.”
The meeting ended with an Our Father, prayed together by the representatives of the Eastern Catholic, Orthodox and Eastern Orthodox churches as a symbol of unity.
