Discalced Augustinians from all over the world are in Rome. They participated in the Order's General Chapter, which will define their lines of work for the upcoming years.
In a meeting with Pope Francis, he reminded them not to break of from the roots in an attempt to be modern. He said tradition is the guarantee of the future.

We are living in a time when the mission “ad gentes” is being renewed. This is even despite a crisis in which we would like faith to increase to the mandate of the Risen Lord, a mandate that retains its strength and its relevance.
The pope recognized the work of the Discalced Augustinians throughout the history of the Church. He asked them to continue witnessing the Augustinian vocation.

I also join you, emotionally remembering the Augustinian missionaries who have given their lives for the Gospel in different parts of the world. I am glad to see they retain their legacy as a treasure for you to renew your mission today, in the way the Second Vatican Council and the challenges of our time ask us.
The Discalced Augustinians devote themselves to the contemplative life and other activities, according to the needs of the Universal Church. In 2015, there were about 220 religious, of which 139 were priests.
