President of Mozambique: Pope to visit center for AIDS patients in Maputo

The president of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi traveled to Rome to meet with the founder of the Community of Sant'Egidio, Andrea Riccardi, and its president, Marco Impagliazzo.

He recalled the negotiations that led to peace in his country in 1992 took place in that house.

'For many years, the Community of Sant'Egidio has been in Mozambique. They have helped us in the peace process and in many social activities.'

Filipe Nyusi said his country is looking forward to welcoming the pope on September 4. He recalled that Pope Francis will visit a center on the outskirts of Maputo, where the Community of Sant'Egidio helps AIDS patients, through its successful DREAM program.

'The DREAM laboratory in Zimpeto, which I visited and will visit the pope, is a very modern center. It caters to all kinds of people and diseases, so much so that it will now be expanded.'

The president thanked San Egidio for the help that they have given in the last months, after Cyclone Idai at the end of April. It caused enormous destruction and ended the lives of more than 600 people in the country.
