Hundreds of people filled the small square – currently under reconstruction – in the Italian city of Camerino to participate in a Mass celebrated by the pope.

In his homily, Pope Francis called for more assistance for the people affected by the devastating earthquakes in 2016. He reminded everyone that there is still much work left to do and he warned against the danger of letting their suffering be forgotten.

POPE FRANCIS
“It's been almost three years, and the risk is that, after the initial, emotional reaction and high-publicity following the event, attention is focused elsewhere and the promises made are forgotten.”

Pope Francis had already visited other affected areas in October of 2016. He was grief-stricken.

In Camerino, he found scaffolding and containment structures throughout the city. However, the inhabitants of the city are still unable to return.

During the Angelus, the pope recalled another crisis – this time worldwide – affecting millions of people.

POPE FRANCIS
“Today we want to remember in a special way the refugees on the day dedicated to them by the United Nations. This occasion invites everyone to stand together with the men, women and children who flee wars, persecutions and the violations of their fundamental rights.”

At the end, the pope warmly greeted many of those present. The inhabitants of Camerino were thrilled by his visit.

The trip did not end there. After the ceremony, the firefighters of Camerino escorted the pope through the deserted streets of the city to the church of Santa Maria in Via, one of the most popular and historic parishes in the town.
