After John Paul II, no pope has visited Bulgaria for 17 years. Likewise, Pope Francis made history as the first pope to ever visit North Macedonia.
He met with both government authorities and religious leaders during his time in the countries. The pope also especially highlighted Mother Teresa, as one of the patrons of his trip to her hometown of Skopje.
