As is usual every year, Pope Francis receives ashes for Lent in the Roman Basilica of St. Sabina. There he presided over the Mass for Ash Wednesday.
After his homily, the pope blessed the ashes before being the first to receive them on his head by Jozef Tomko. He is the cardinal of this basilica.
Afterward, Pope Francis placed the ashes on the heads of some cardinals, bishops and others in attendance for this ceremony.
