Theodore Edgar McCarrick, has been expelled from the priesthood. He was the former Archbishop of Washington in the United States.

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has declared McCarrick guilty of committing crimes of sexual abuse with minors and adults, “with the aggravating factor of the abuse of power.”

It is the first time the Holy See has expelled someone from the priesthood also for the abuse of adults.

Theodore McCarrick has appealed against the verdict but it has been dismissed. The pope confirmed this expulsion from the priesthood as irrevocable.

This decision comes just days before the “Meeting on the Protection of Minors” convoked by Pope Francis.

However, McCarrick's case is not over. In Oct. 2018 the pope commissioned an internal investigation to find out how McCarrick managed to rise up through the ranks of the Church despite allegations against him.
