The President of South Korea, Moon Jae-in, and Pope Francis will meet on Thursday, Oct. 18 at the Vatican Apostolic Palace.

At the meeting with Pope Francis, he will present an invitation from North Korea's leader, Kim Jong-un, to the pope to visit his country.

According to Bishop You Heung-Sik, it was the President of South Korea who influenced Kim in inviting the pope.

“He suggested that the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, invite Pope Francis to North Korea, explaining its benefit. In response, Kim expressed his willingness to welcome him with open arms.”

Bishop You Heung-Sik believes if the pope decides to visit North Korea, it could help bring further peace to a nation historically divided.

“A papal visit to North Korea would be meaningful and rewarding, enabling the two Koreas to coexist peacefully as one people under God's authority.”

According to World Watch Reports 2017, North Korea is one of the most dangerous countries for a Christian.

Benedict Rogers, founder of Christian Solidarity Worldwide, says Christians in North Korea have no religious freedom and suffer if caught practicing their faith.

“If you are a Christian in North Korea and you are discovered to be a Christian; if you are found to possess a Bible in your home; if you are found to be meeting with other Christians to pray; you certainly will end up in a prison camp for probably for the rest of your life. In some cases you might be executed.”

Kim Jong-un's invitation could be a step in beginning the process of establishing peace and more tolerance toward religion.

While in Rome, the president will also participate at a “Mass for Peace” for the Korean Peninsula presided over by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State.
