The Swedish Academy has awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to Dr. Denis Mukwege and human rights activist Nadia Murad.
Nadia Murad is a Yazidi Iraqi. When the self-proclaimed Islamic state attacked her village, Kocho, in Sinjar, she witnessed terrorists kill 18 members of her family, including her mother. She was kidnapped and turned into a sex slave by jihadists.
Three months later, she escaped from her captivity. Since then, she has dedicated herself to seeking justice and claiming the declaration of genocide for the Yazidi people. In May 2017 she met Pope Francis.
Dr. Mukwege is a gynecologist and works in the Democratic Republic of Congo where he treats women. They have been raped, tortured and mutilated in a war that uses aggression against women as a weapon of war.
Both were also awarded the European Parliament's Sakharov Prize.
