“The Mass” is a new documentary that offers a step-by-step guide, through video format, on the meaning and purpose of the Catholic Mass, featuring Bishop Robert Barron, an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles who uses media to educate people about the Catholic faith.

According to Bishop Barron, in a time where people are more geared to watching videos, video format has the potential of reaching out to more people than possibly a book.

“Far greater chance to reach people if you bring this material forward in a video format...” “The video is more attractive for people today, and they are much more likely to watch than to read.”

According to Bishop Barron, there seems to be a decrease in mass attendance and a potential lack of understanding toward the liturgy. He wanted to make this documentary to help people understand the Mass better.

“Seventy-five percent of Catholics regularly stay away from Mass, and so we have to revive a sense of it. And I would say even among those good, you know, 25 percent of people that come many of them I suspect don't know quite what the Mass is...”

Although wanting to reach out to all people, this documentary hopes to help educational and formational programs in parishes.

“There are so many parish programs I think that could benefit from, you know, introducing people more deeply into the Mass. So my hope is that the video trickles down into the various educational and formational programs within our parishes...”

“The Mass” documentary is a part of Bishop Robert Barron's “Word on Fire” media ministry that utilizes the tools of new media to educate people globally about the Catholic faith. This new documentary is available through the website wordonfire.org.
