The pope shares in the “sadness” of the news of fires in Athens, which have caused dozens of deaths and hundreds wounded.

In this telegram sent by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Francis sends his “solidarity to all those affected by the tragedy.” He prays for the deceased and sends words of encouragement for those who are assisting in the rescue work.

Greece has declared a state of alert and asks Europe for help in dealing with this tragedy.

To the local ecclesiastical and civil authorities His Holiness Pope Francis was deeply saddened to learn of the recent wildfires in Greece, and extends his heartfelt solidarity to all those affected by this tragedy. In particular, he commends the deceased to the merciful love of Almighty God, and offers encouragement to the civil authorities and emergency personnel as they continue in their rescue efforts. Upon all who mourn, Pope Francis willingly invokes the Lord’s blessings of consolation and strength.
