Cardinal Angelo Amato is turning 80 years old, and the number of cardinal electors eligible to vote in a potential conclave falls to 114.

Amato held important positions in the Vatican. In 2002, he was named secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, a position then held by Joseph Ratzinger. In 2008, Benedict XVI asked him to succeed Cardinal José Saraiva at the helm of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.

In recent years, Amato has brought some of the century's most important causes to Benedict XVI and Pope Francis. For example, the canonization of John XXIII, Paul VI and John Paul II or Mother Teresa and Óscar Romero.
