The Vatican has published a brief press release stating that José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero met in private with Pope Francis. Although the Holy See did not give details on what was discussed, it was likely the crisis in Venezuela.
Zapatero was present on Sunday for the elections, for which the pope asked for prayers during his latest Regina Coeli.

“I wish to dedicate a special memory to my beloved Venezuela again. I ask the Holy Spirit to give to the whole Venezuelan population, everyone, including government leaders, wisdom. So they find the way of peace and unity.”
Pope Francis is closely following the situation in Venezuela. He's calling for humanitarian aid and help for refugees in nearby countries.
The Vatican held an important role in dialogue for peace between the government and opposition, but has not taken any further extensive action since.
