When the pope arrived in St. Peter's Square, he saw this group of children who he asked to ride with him in the popemobile. He also greeted these small soccer players that were waiting for him in the square.
Later, in his catechesis, he began a new series on baptism. He explained that through this sacrament, one is immersed in the saving mystery of the Lord’s death and resurrection and becomes an adoptive son or daughter of God our Father.

POPE FRANCIS

Those of you who don't remember the date of your baptism, ask your mom, your aunts and uncles, your nieces and nephews. But ask them, 'Do you know what the date of my baptism is?' And don't ever forget it. Everyone must know the date of their baptism. It's another birthday. It's the birthday of the rebirth.”

The pope asked fathers and mothers to value this sacrament and baptize their children, because the graces received here help cultivate Christian virtues.

POPE FRANCIS

Some think, 'Why should we baptize a child if they don't understand? We should wait until they grow and understand and they themselves can ask for baptism.' But this is not trusting the Holy Spirit because when we baptize a child, the Holy Spirit enters in him or her and the Holy Spirit helps grow Christian virtues in this child that can flourish. You must always give children the opportunity to have the Holy Spirit inside to guide them throughout their life. Don't forget to baptize children.”

Pope Francis also greeted these three pilgrims who traveled from northern Italy to Rome with their llamas, for a blessing from the pope. They gave Francis some socks and a llama wool skullcap to protect him from the cold. But with the arrival of spring, it is likely that the pope will keep them for next year.
