“Holy Father.”
“It's nice to meet you.”
“May God bless you. I present you my credentials and the resignation of my predecessor.”
“Thank you very much.”
“What a dream.”
The new ambassador from Nicaragua, Esther Margarita Carballo, presented Pope Francis with her credentials and introduced her family during their first encounter.
Among the gifts the ambassador gave the pope, this hammock didn't go unnoticed.
“It's personalized. Only you can lay down there.”
“Thank you very much.”
It could be said that Carballo is a diplomat with ecological thinking very similar to the pope's. She's a 64-year-old biologist and boasts a long tenure in the university environment. Her country, in fact, nearly rejected the terms of the Paris Agreement because it considered them too “weak.”
Pope Francis prayed together with the ambassador's family.
The Holy Father warmly bid farewell to one of the youngest from the entourage.
“Hi, Lourdes. What a beautiful name, huh?”
Nicaragua and the Holy See have maintained diplomatic relations since 1908.
