After 14 hours in the air and passing over eight countries, Pope Francis landed in Chile. He arrived an hour early, at 7:15 p.m. Chilean time. The pope chose to get off the plane without wearing his cap, due to strong winds.
Once on the ground, the Holy Father was welcomed by the president of Chile, Michelle Bachelet; the president of the senate, Andrés Zaldivar; the archbishop of Santiago, Cardinal Ricardo Ezzati Andrello; and the president of the Chilean Episcopal Conference, Msgr. Santiago Silva Retamales, among others.
But the reception from these children with flowers seemed to be the pope's favorite.
In fact, this little one didn't want to leave.
Although his disposition was serious at first, it changed within minutes. Those present gave him a euphoric welcome.
“Welcome to Chile”
An orchestra livened the arrival. With the music in the background, the pope exchanged a few words with the president. After, this little girl sang. Pope Francis seemed to enjoy it so much that he waited for her to finish before thanking and blessing her.
The president accompanied the pope to his car, where they bid farewell until the next day.
Before heading to the nunciature, the Holy Father made an unexpected visit to the tomb of Bishop Enrique Alvear, known as the “bishop of the poor,” who died in 1982.
Pope Francis prayed for a few minutes in front of the tomb before departing for the nunciature, but he wasn't able to do so quietly, due to the excited screams of those waiting outside.
The pope showed his appreciation for the reception from the Chilean people.
At one point along the way, he traded his car for the popemobile to be able to greet those who awaited him up close.
At last, Pope Francis arrived at the nunciature, where he immediately kissed this baby and greeted the children who were expecting him. He even exchanged caps and received gifts. The Holy Father took his time greeting everyone. There were some who couldn't contain their excitement.
With this excitement, enthusiasm and affection, Pope Francis' trip to Chile began, his 22nd papal trip.
