They come from a Brazilian island once tagged as the “party destination of the year,” but couldn't visit the Eternal City without partaking in the festivities at Pope Francis' Wednesday General Audience.
Only a few members of this extended family had a specific motive for traveling from Florianópolis to Europe. The rest, who themselves are no rookies of transatlantic travel, simply decided to take advantage of an opportunity to see more of the continent. Their spontaneous selection led them to Rome.
“We went to Luxembourg to do nationality, and Italy is close to all of Europe, so it's interesting.”
Once Heins' father had completed the citizenship process for him and his two sons in Luxembourg – to which the family has ancestral ties – the group ventured to the Eternal City. While they said Rome's “culture, history and churches” would've been engaging enough, the bunch was shocked when they were able to gain entry to see the Holy Father himself.
“It was very surprising that we could see the pope because we were not expecting it. We're very grateful.”
In a few days, the family will return to their homeland along with the sunny weather they seemingly brought. First, though, they'll explore as much of Rome as possible, carrying the joy inspired by Pope Francis.
