This was the joyful opening ceremony for the 100 Nativity Scenes exposition, one of the most well-known Christmas exhibitions in the world. It will be open in Rome until January 7.

MARIACARLA MENAGLIA
Director, “100 Nativity Scenes”

“Some Nativity builders are artists who have participated with us for many years, but this year there are 45 first-timers. There's a beautiful variety. This event has become a benchmark for world craftsmanship.”

This exhibit began 42 years ago. During the Christmas season, Mariacarla's father noticed people were focusing on tree decoration and not the Nativity scene. He met with his friends one day to present just over 10 of these displays. Now, his daughter is continuing the tradition with 152

They vary from large to small, made of ceramic, wool, cloth, wood or even glass. Each one is unique and contains representative elements from its place of origin.

The competition has three categories: fantasy, traditional and ones built in schools and social aid centers. Each year, more artists want to compete.

“We received nearly 453 applications this year, but were only able to accept 152. It's a difficult decision, so the displayed works are of great artisanal quality.”

One of the most special characteristics of this edition is the presence of social works. Mariacarla assures the Villa Maraini Foundation's entry is the one that impacted her most.

“These guys have constructed a Nativity scene denouncing femicide. They did it so well that one gets emotional upon seeing it. They have a great awareness.”

This display from Poland will be donated to Pope Francis once the contest has finished on January 8. Will the pope want to decorate the Vatican with this peculiar Nativity scene?
