Like every Sunday, Pope Francis prayed the Angelus in front of thousands of people in St. Peter's Square and reflected on the day's Gospel

The pope said, as in the times of the Pharisees, there are still people who take advantage of their power and authority to oppress others.

POPE FRANCIS
“Authority is helpful, but if it is abused, it becomes oppressive. It doesn't allow people to grow and creates a climate of distrust and hostility; it also drives corruption.”

Pope Francis explained that Christians must not live “based on appearance” or “look down on” the rest, but rather must be humble and “docile to the love that comes from God.”

POPE FRANCIS
“There must be a simple, fraternal attitude among us. We are all brothers and must not overpower the rest in any way or look down on them. No, we are all brothers.”

The pope added that modesty is a fundamental characteristic of living “according to Jesus' teachings,” and that personal qualities must be put at the service of others.
