They come from a town in Germany with a double objective: to attend the General Audience with Pope Francis and play here, in the middle of St. Peter's Square. The group is called 'Cucumber brass' and is made up of Catholics, Protestants and Baptists who claim to have the same Christian belief.
“We felt it was a great community together, a lot of people. It was very quiet although there was so many people, and you feel like brothers and sisters together really.”
They play to praise God, but also to have fun. While they haven't been able to perform for Pope Francis yet, they can play surrounded by the public attracted to these musical notes.
“I wanted [to play inside] but it wasn't allowed in this area there. They didn't want to make trouble, so they play here and they play for people and for God.”
The pope's words during the Audience reminded them that there are both bitter and sweet moments in life, but the Father's embrace always awaits at the end.
“Cross and paradise. That's together, even in life. And if you live this, we have cross and we have paradise, but we know at the end of all will be paradise”.
With the joy of hearing Pope Francis catechesis, the “Cucumber brass” band remains in the square, enchanting dozens of pilgrims who continue to stop and listen to them.
