The secretary of Benedict XVI says that the words of the pope emeritus are being misconstrued.

He is referring to the former pope's message written for the funeral of Cardinal Joachim Meisner, one of the four cardinals who asked for clarification from Pope Francis. Benedict XVI recalled that the cardinal knew how to live with the certainty that 'the Lord does not abandon his Church, even if it seems that the boat is so full it is about to tip over.”

Some people have read these comments as against Pope Francis' pontificate.

However, Georg Gänswein says that the pope emeritus' words have simply been misunderstood. He recalled that the image of the boat that sails in the midst of a storm is inspired by the Gospel, and in no ways does it refer to any particular situation regarding Pope Francis.
