Before the recitation of the Angelus prayer, Pope Francis reflected on Sunday's Gospel and noted that Christians need to respond to the worldâ??s â??astutenessâ?? with the gift of the Holy Spirit.
POPE FRANCIS
'Worldliness is manifested by attitudes of corruption, deception, abuse of power, and constitutes the most wrong road, the road of sin, because one thing brings you to another! Itâ??s like a chain, even if it is true that it is generally the easiest one to follow.â?
Pope Francis noted that the spirit of the Gospel requires Christians to lead a serious but joyful lifestyle committed to honesty, respect and a sense of dignity for others.
POPE FRANCIS
'The journey of life necessarily involves a choice between two roads: between honesty and dishonesty, between fidelity and infidelity, between selfishness and altruism, between good and evil. You can not oscillate between one and the other, because they move on different and conflicting logic.â?
The pope later lamented the widespread corruption that has spread throughout society and suggested we follow the logic of the Gospel and of brotherhood. He said, 'we become artisans of justice and open horizons of hope for humanity.â? Pope Francis also described the behavior and mentality of a corrupt person to that of a person on drugs.
POPE FRANCIS
'You think you can use it and stop when you want. It starts with little: a tip here, a bribe over thereâ?¦ And between this and that, slowly one loses his freedom. Even corruption produces addiction, and generates poverty, exploitation, and suffering. How many victims are there in the world today?â?
After reciting the Sunday Angelus with pilgrims in St. Peter's Square, the pope said that he will travel to Assisi to participate in the World Day of Prayer for Peace. The pope prayed that in this world full of war, all people take some time to pray and work toward peace.
