In the wake of the devastating earthquake that has hit the small mountainous town of Amatrice, the Italian Red Cross, the Corps of Firefighters of the Vatican City State, local volunteers and other rescue workers continue to work tirelessly to save the dozens that are still believed to be trapped underneath the rubble in the surrounding areas of Amatrice, Accumoli and Pescara del Tronto.
Rescuers are prepared with large cranes, machinery and ropes. They can be spotted due to their blue and yellow hardhats, while medical staff are prepared with dust masks and white hard hats.
In addition, there are also trained rescue dogs, who are assisting in saving surviving victims and helicopters flying overhead, ready to airlift those seriously injured.
More than 1,000 people have been displaced by the quake. The number of resulting deaths from the quake has risen to at least 250.
In Amatrice, the largest affected town, with 2,000 residents, doubles its population in the summer with tourists. Now the town is uniting in solidarity, using the hashtag 'Amatrice.â?
